Yuusuke Urameshi

Utama

Male · Umur 14-18

The main protagonist of the manga and anime series YuYu Hakusho. He is a Spirit Detective who is tasked with protecting the Human World from various supernatural threats over the course of the series and his closest friends, as well as greatest allies, include Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, Keiko, Genkai, Koenma and Botan. He is also the de facto leader of Team Urameshi and the general person to look to when the going gets tough. At the start of the series, Yusuke is an uncontrollable teenage delinquent/street fighter with little to no positive qualities to his character. Over the course of the series, he starts becoming a better person, changing into an almost altruistic defender of the Human World while he himself continues to become a powerful martial artist. Nozomu Sasaki

Kazuma Kuwabara

Utama

Male

Kuwabara, as most people call him, is the second-toughest kid in Sarayashiki Junior High School and is always trying to usurp Yusuke Urameshi's position as the toughest. In the manga(chp.1) he says he never lost a fight until he met Yusuke. He leads a gang consisting of himself, Kirishima, Okubo, and Sawamura (In the English dub, Komada). He has a soft spot for kittens (including his own, Eikichi) and an iron code of honor. He develops a minor crush on Botan when he first meets her, but later harbors intense feelings on the ice apparition Yukina, but is unaware that she is Hiei's sister. Kuwabara has a tough older sister named Shizuru Kuwabara. She and Yukina are the only characters known to call him by his given name. In the anime, Kazuma and Shizuru's parents never appear and are rarely, if ever, even acknowledged. His father does makes a brief appearance in the final volume of the manga to reveal that Yukina is going to be living with them and appears to be aware of the Reikai, etc. As the show progress, Kuwabara's and Yusuke's relationship evolves from rivals to best friends, although the two still disagree constantly. Kuwabara and Kurama are quite cordial with each other, but Kuwabara shares no love for Hiei, and both will readily mention their hatred of the other, although in truth deep down they are friends. Kuwabara's most unusual ability is his sensitivity to Reiki, or Spirit Awareness. He and his band of friends call this "the Tickle." Kuwabara has the ability to sense when ghosts and the paranormal are around, can see spirits and other demons, and can predict motives of others. Kuwabara can also create a blade out of his own spirit energy (known as the Rei Ken, or Spirit Sword). Although he first needed a piece of wood as a physical entity to create it, Kuwabara was able to practice and be able to create his own after one month (six months in the English anime). During his training, Kuwabara's sword is able to extend and shrink to his whim, and he can even create two, one in each hand. Kuwabara is not as strong as the rest of his teammates, but can be quite crafty in battle when he needs to be, and he is widely considered as the nicest of the four.

Shigeru Chiba

Kurama

Utama

Male

Kurama is first encountered in the series at the same time as Hiei. His ability is in manipulating plants, and he generally wields a whip created from a rose vine, complete with thorns. He is one of the wiser characters in the series and the smartest and calmest of the four main characters. Kurama is generally regarded as the most calm and level-headed member of the group. His analytical nature is present in battle where he prefers to study the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents before devising a strategy of his own. He is protective of those he cares about and is often merciless to anyone that poses them a threat, a shift in his usually friendly manner. In many instances, Kurama has shown to be very self-sacrificing in the interests of the safety of his friends and family. Fox Demon Kurama/Youko Kurama was a cold hearted and ruthless thief and the most feared bandit in Makai. He was considered to be an A-class demon (though he eventually surpasses that), and is said to be more than a thousand years old. After being wounded by a bounty hunter while in his spirit fox form, Kurama sent his spirit into the Ningenkai (human world) where his spirit took refuge within an unborn child that had not yet gained a soul. It was from this point that Kurama made the transfer to a human body with the intention to recover his strength as the child developed. Kurama planned to leave Ningenkai to return to Makai after regaining his strength after an estimated ten years. However, sometime during or before the tenth year, an act of selflessness by his mother, Minamino Shiori, opened Kurama's eyes to pain he had caused his mother while growing up. Thus, he decides to continue living his human life as Shiori's son. Kurama's special ability is that he can turn plants into deadly weapons by manipulating his youki into that plant. Kurama has complete control over any Human Realm plant and has some control over Demon Realm plants. However Demon Fox Kurama has complete control over Demon Realm Plants and has more power than regular Kurama. The strength of Kurama's moves depends on how much aura Kurama uses. He has an incredible sense of smell and he can read lips. Though Kurama is considered the second weakest of the four main fighters, topping out at low S-class power by the end of the series, he is easily the smartest fighter of the four. He relies on cunning and tactics and not necessarily power to win battles. (Source: Wikipedia)

Hiei

Utama

Male

Hiei is a main character in Yu Yu Hakusho, a demon who prefers to keep his distance from others. Because of this he often comes across as aloof and elusive. He has a rather cynical and even misanthropic view of the world around him, often belittling and mocking humans and their emotions and the significance they place on friendship and life. Hiei is the shortest of the four main characters at only 147 cm (4'10) during the Dark Tournament as stated by Juri. Despite his short size, he has a lean, muscular build to him. He wears a white headband that conceals his Jagan Eye, which is placed on his forehead and has a purple iris. His eyes are crimson, with an angular and slightly slanted shape, giving him a very sinister look in the beginning of the series. He has spiky black hair with blue outlining and white streaks. His skin complexion is regular peach-tan. Living up to his classic villainous persona, Hiei usually dresses entirely in black. Trivia: - Hiei was based on the character Skunky from Patalliro! Nobuyuki Hiyama

Botan

Pendukung

Female

Botan is the guide for the dead across the Sanzu River (the River Styx), Botan is hardly typical of what one would expect from the shinigami, or death god; clad in a bright pink kimono, with her blue hair in a ponytail. Botan is cheerful, sometimes sarcastic, and a completely atypical version of Death (something the main character Yusuke Urameshi points out almost immediately after meeting her). Although her initial purpose is to help Yusuke cross over to the Spirit World, or Reikai, Botan eventually becomes a sort of guardian angel to Yusuke, helping him in his efforts to return to his body, and when Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective, being the liaison between Yusuke and friends, and Koenma in Reikai. Botan works hard, cares deeply for others, and tries not to let her friends know when she's down. Botan is not a fighter like those around her, but she has fought several times, often to help Keiko Yukimura to get her out of trouble. She has no spirit powers like Yusuke's Rei Gun or Kuwabara's Spirit Sword, but she possesses heightened spirit awareness and spiritual energy (as can be determined by her ability to use the detective tools, which require spirit energy in order to work.) Typically, when Botan fights, she tends to favor blunt instruments like her oar, a metal bat, or, if all else fails, her fists. In her human form, Botan can use any of Yusuke's detective items. In one scene during the episode "Setting the Trap", Botan was planning to use the Concentration Ring to blow up walls, which suggests she might have spirit powers like Yusuke, but they are undisclosed. Botan tends to use human weapons, or something heavy around, to fight while in the human world. Botan also possesses healing powers, to the extent that she could stop or pause demonic transformations. In the old FUNimation dub, she is given a slight British accent.

Sanae Miyuki

Genkai

Pendukung

She trains Yusuke in the Spirit Light Wave Fist (Reikō Hadō Ken) aka the Spirit Wave in the English dub and coaches him to the extreme. Though she may appears nasty towards Yusuke and the others, she truly cares about all of them, and tries to lead them down the right road. Genkai is an elderly martial arts expert who lives alone in a very large temple. She first appears during Yusuke's second case as he infiltrates a tournament she is holding to find a successor to her techniques in search of the demon Rando. Genkai is a legendary reiki master, known both in the human and demon realms. Yusuke ends up winning the tournament, defeating Rando in the process, and is taken on as a student by Genkai. Although Genkai is of advanced age and her physical and spiritual strength had gone down, she is still a fighter to be respected and feared. Even after she gave up most of her power to Yusuke, she still is capable of using some Reiki notably during the Chapter Black saga.

Megumi Hayashibara

Yukina

Pendukung

Female

Height: 152 cm (4'10") Yukina is the kind, thoughtful, and somewhat naïve twin sister of Hiei. Her name literally means 'Ice Sprout'. Yukina was born as an ice apparition (Kourime, literally ‘Ice Woman’), the same as her clan. Ice apparitions have special abilities relating to snow and ice, and have light healing abilities. In addition, when they cry, their tears become gems, which are highly valuable in the human world. But she was also born with a twin brother Hiei. Her twin brother was the forbidden child who was never supposed to exist, and was "killed" by being thrown off a cliff, despite his mother's desperate pleas. At the beginning of the series, Yukina had no knowledge that both Hiei existed and that she had a brother. Hiei also, for reasons that remain largely unknown to Yukina, always shows up at various times to protect her when others aren't around or are unable to do so. In the manga, Yukina does eventually figure out that Hiei is, in fact, her brother. (In the English Dub Hiei often tells her that her brother is most likely dead) Yukina is also the love interest of Kazuma Kuwabara, although she remains unaware of this. The very first time Kuwabara saw Yukina via video tape, Kuwabara replied that he was in love and left quickly to rescue her, although he didn't stay long enough to find out that Yukina was Hiei's sister. At any time he can, Kuwabara will try to protect Yukina at any cost to him. At the very first sight of Yukina, Kuwabara's strength rapidly increases past its normal limits, as seen during his battle with Risho. After seeing how Tarukane treated Yukina, Kuwabara told her he wanted her to not hate humans, to which she replied that she didn't dislike humans and liked Kuwabara.

Yuri Shiratori

Koenma

Pendukung

Male · Umur 700+

King Enma Jr., usually addressed as Koenma, is the son of Enma, the ruler of the spirit realm, and the one responsible for appointing Yusuke Urameshi as spirit detective. Koenma first appears as a toddler, which he is often teased about, though he is at least 700 years old and has extensive knowledge of the universe. Koenma is a basic comic relief character and is often shown as cowardly. However, if Yusuke or any of the others are in immediate danger, he will help all he can. He comes off as a good leader and a nice guy for the most part. His job in Spirit World is to decide who goes to Heaven, and who goes to Hell. Some think this should be his father's job, but King Enma is too busy on business trips most of the time. Also, he has a Jr. sign on his forehead, and still has his pacifier, which has been carried in his mouth for most of his existence, storing up his spirit energy. When the power is unleashed, it creates the Mafukkan, Spirit World's most powerful defensive spell.

Mayumi Tanaka

Touya

Pendukung

Toya, Touya in the English anime, is one of the members of the Shadow Channelers in the Dark Tournament. The team's true name, however, was the Shinobi of the Spirit World. It is assumed that Jin and Toya are friends because they are rarely seen not in each other's company. In contrast to his demon companion, Toya seems serious and fairly humorless. He does, however, have something of an honor code and berates team leader, Risho, about why their cheating is wrong. He has a strong sense of team loyalty, and attempts to kill Kurama after Kurama defeats Gama. Toya has the power to manipulate ice and cold, and it is highly implied during the series that Toya is the strongest ice demon in the series. Toya first appears in the Dark Tournament. In the tournament, his opponent is Kurama, who is rendered immobile and energyless due to Gama's Makeups of Chains and of the Seal. He unveils several ice techniques in this battle, angry that Kurama killed Gama in the previous battle. Kurama defeats him by sowing the Seed of the Death Plant into his own body and impaling Touya with the plant. He did this because his Spirit Energy was trapped inside because of Gama's Makeup of the Seal. Following the Dark Tournament, Toya appears in the Saga of the Three Kings of the anime. He was recruited by Kurama to work for a Demon Lord, Yomi and reaches the A+ Class, turning out to be the demonstrated stongest out of all 6 in the anime series. During the tournament, Toya is defeated by an S-Class demon named Kuju, who is the brother of another S-Class demon named Natsume whom Chu fell in love with. After the Makai Tournament, Jin, Toya, Chu, and Rinku say their goodbyes to Yusuke and the group. It is unknown where they go from there.

Yasunori Matsumoto

Jin

Pendukung

Jin is one of the members of the Shadow Channelers team during the Dark Tournament. The team's true name, however, was the Shinobi of the Spirit World. He is assumed friends with Touya, another member, since one is almost never seen independent of the other, except when fighting, and they stick together after the Dark Tournament. Jin has a cheerful and up-beat personality. Jin speaks with a strong Irish accent (in the English dub) and has a serious disdain for his team-mate, the brutish Bakken. He tells Yusuke that a fighter shouldn't bring outside hostilities and anger into a match, and that they should enjoy themselves - especially when they are battling for their lives. Despite his sunny disposition - or perhaps because of it - Jin is an incredibly talented fighter who throws himself whole-heartedly into a match. Jin's special ability is wind manipulation, being able to float in the air, create miniature cyclones around his fists, or create full-blown tornadoes. Jin first appeared, along with the other members of the Shadow Channlers, in the Dark Tournament against Team Urameshi. Jin, just as he wanted, ended up fighting Yusuke Urameshi. After a long battle where each of them sent one powerful attack after another to their opponent, Jin finally got knocked out of the arena and lost. Unfortunately for Yusuke, due to a trick made by the team's owner, the battle was counted as a tie. Following the Dark Tournament, Jin later appears in the Makai Tournament. He was recruited by Kurama to work for one of the three Demon Lords, Yomi in the Demon Plane, or Makai. Jin trains under Genkai before entering the Makai Tournament, and goes from an upper C Class to an upper A Class. During the tournament itself, Jin ends up fighting Souketsu, who was a former friend and rival of Yusuke's ancestral father, the thunder god Raizen. A flashback is shown where Soketsu is defeated by the deceased king (Raizen).

Kappei Yamaguchi

Karasu

Pendukung

A member of the Togoru team in the dark tournament. Karasu is a lower B Class demon. Karasu's personality is largely unknown, with Karasu always remaining calm and serious, never showing his true self. Karasu always wears a mask over his lower face. His goal in the tournament was to have Kurama's severed head. In the second Character Popularity Polls in Japan, Karasu was at 8th place with 698 votes, making him the most popular member of Team Toguro. Sometime ago, Karasu and Bui faced off against the Toguro brothers, where the brothers won. Promising them a rematch if they joined their force, the two followed the Toguro Brothers. Karasu is a demon bomber, and as such can not only explode things without physical contact, he can also create bombs himself, including winged bombs and giant cases of dynamite. Karasu's most dangerous ability comes after he removes his mask, and his hair turns from black to blond, a full-body explosion strong enough to kill large numbers of humans. Before the Final Rounds, Karasu met Kurama in an alley where the two had a confrontation, which ended in Karasu victorious. During the Final Rounds, Karasu fought against Kurama, where he almost killed Kurama off rather quickly, and it was only thanks to a potion Suzuka gave to Kurama that helped him live, transforming him into Youko. Kurama then gained the advantage, having a giant plant eat Karasu. Karasu simply exploded the plant and used his full-body explosion on Kurama, reverting him back to human. Karasu then had the complete advantage, almost killing Kurama, but Kurama used a Vampire Plant to stab Karasu's heart, killing him. However, Kurama still failed to win the match since he attacked from his knees and timed out.

Ryou Horikawa

Shishiwakamaru

Pendukung

Shishiwakamaru is a member of the Fractured Fairy Tales in the Dark Tournament. His name is a take on Ushiwakamura, a famous historic general, whose exploits are recounted in Noh theater. The Cape of No Return is based on a Hagoromo, also famous in Noh plays. Shishiwakamaru is first introduced as one of the most sadistic and evil characters in YuYu Hakusho, and enjoys killing and fighting. As a hater of justice, in his own words "Violence is [his] meat, and wickedness [his] ambrosia," and he has no use for hypocritical "pacifists". Shishiwakamaru, however, is at times shown to be a protagonist, although he usually does so for reasons gaining towards him, very similar to Hiei. Shishiwakamaru, as shown in the Dark Tournament, has a very large amount of female fans, affectionately calling him "Waka," and he explains he fought in the Dark Tournament to please his fans. He is one of the few demons from the Dark Tournament to reappear again after the saga. Shishiwakamaru is the owner of the Cape of No Return, which sends whatever it touches to anywhere, even another dimension. His main weapon is his blade, the Banshee Shriek, which has the power to steal other souls and release them as either attacks or defenses. He first fights Kuwabara and uses an item called the Cape of No Return. He then fights against Genkai. He is defeated after Genkai used her Reihado-ken, stole some of his power, and then uses her Spirit Reflection Blast (Rei Kou Kyou Han Shyo). He then trains under her and goes from an upper C-class to an upper A-class demon to enter the Makai Tournament and win his stardom. Although he makes it past the preliminaries, he doesn't make it far from that point. He is usually seen sitting on Suzuki's shoulder while in his tiny form.

Toguro Otouto

Pendukung

Male

Younger Toguro is the younger of the two Toguro brothers, as well as the most powerful member of Team Toguro. He is the main antagonist of the Dark Tournament Saga, aside from Sakyo. He is always calm and collected, as is expressed by the fact that he never removes his trademark sunglasses. He has no plans in life and spends most of the series serving under Sakyo, one of his most important clients. He's tall and extremely muscular with a slick black hairstyle.

Tesshou Genda

Bui

Pendukung

Bui is the least seen and least evil member of Team Toguro. He is almost always seen wearing armor over himself, although it is revealed in the anime that he is a somewhat middle-aged man with short light blue hair and a scar on the center of his forehead when he takes his armor off during his battle with Hiei. He rarely ever speaks, and when he finally does it is revealed he has a particularily eerie voice. Bui's goal in the tournament was to have a rematch with Younger Toguro, using the tournament as training. Bui and Karasu some time ago fought and lost against the Toguro Brothers, and each of them then joined their force under the premise they would one day have a rematch.

Tetsuo Kanao

Chuu

Pendukung

Male

The true captain of the Jolly Devil Six a.k.a. Team Rokuyukai. One of his types of fighting styles is the Drunken Fist. When preforming Drunken Fist he moves with an erratic stumbling motion which, in addition to making him difficult to attack, allows him to move very quickly. He fuses his demon energy with the alcohol to form his Sui Ken, which is a ball of energy he throws at his opponent. The other form of fighting he uses is his favorite type- a Knife Edge Death Match, in which he put his knives into the floor of the arena, and he and his opponent put their feet to the knife. The first one to slip his foot off the knife loses, and the winner has the right to kill the loser. He later falls in love with a demon girl named Natsume, in the Makai Tournament and surrenders to her automatically when fighting in the preliminaries. In the English dub he is given an Australian accent.

Norio Wakamoto

M1

Pendukung

M1, M2, and M3 are members of Team Ichigaki in the Dark Tournament. Their real names, however, are, in order, Yen, Kai, and Ryo. Every since they were children they were trained by their master, Mitamura, and learned martial arts. However, when Dr. Ichigaki poisoned their master, the three gave their freedom up to get Ichigaki to heal their master. Dr. Ichigaki then implanted Blood-Slaver Nodes, which can only be removed at the cost of their host's life, on their backs, putting them under his complete control and largely increasing their strength. Their souls remained trapped inside and unable to do anything, although all three wanted to be free of Ichigaki at all cost, even death. Their souls did have some abilities, however, as shown by how they sent Kuwabara a message in their dreams explaining their pasts. All three of them are very skilled. M2 and M3's attacks are invisible to those without sufficient spirit training, in contrast M1 distracts the enemies with visible attacks. They fight extremely efficiently as a team, using their attacks to cover each other and keep their opponents on the defensive. The three make their first appearance during the preliminaries, where they win their matches without a single loss and easily kill a member of the opposing team who tried to kill them. The next day, while Kuwabara was sleeping, they sent a message to him that explained how they became Ichigaki's servants. In the Dark Tournament pairing, Team Ichigaki is the first team they fight during the main tournament and have a team battle with them against Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Genkai, where Yusuke and Kuwabara were initially unable to see though their attacks at all. Under Ichigkai's commands, they neutralize Kuwabara from fighting, and the anger at Ichigaki gives Yusuke the ability to see though their techniques and attack them successfully. Genkai then used a special technique that gave their souls the strength to choose if they are corrupt or pure, and their souls removed the Nodes without killing their bodies, winning the match for Team Urameshi. Although at first they felt that they should not be allowed to see their master, Genkai explained to them how they were healed, and Mitamura forgave them. Kai then attempted to take Kuwabara's place in Team Urameshi to make it up to them, though the tournament rules forbade it. It is also shown that all three of them and their master made it out of the arena alive after the final matches.

Hidetoshi Nakamura

Zeru

Pendukung

Zeru is the "Captain" Of Jolly Devil Six. His power is based around fire (火炎術), his only attacks he uses are Fire Aura, and a fire blast attack. He seemingly punches Hiei through the stomach, then shoots a fire blast at him, yet again seemingly killing him. Then Hiei appears behind Zeru, stunning him as he doesn't realize that a fire-based attack won't work on other fire demons. Thus he is killed by the infamous Black Dragon Hell Fire (Jao Ensatsu Koku Ryu Ha) (referred to as Dragon of the Darkness Flame in the English version). Upper C class demon.

He was killed by Shishiwakamaru when he threw his sword into the barrier and impaled him in the neck before he could tell. He is then revealed to be a disguised lesser demon. Toguro Ani

Pendukung

Male

Elder Toguro is the oldest of the Toguro Brothers. He is very tiny, and usually rides on Younger Toguro's shoulder instead of walking. He is much more unpleasant than his younger brother, and can manage to anger the usually calm Younger Toguro. His goal in the tournament was to have every member of Team Urameshi dead, as well as their friends. In the second Character Popularity Polls in Japan, he was at 11th place with 421 votes. Elder Toguro, along side his brother and Genkai, built a dojo together. After Kairen's attack, the three entered the Dark Tournament. After winning, the two wished to become demons. Sometime after this, they both became servants of Sakyo. Elder Toguro's main ability is body manipulation, or rather changing the shape of it. He can reorganize the location of his bodily organs and shape himself into weapons for his brother, like swords or spears. He can create drills from his fingers and swords from his arm, and can also make "puppets" by transforming his arm into a miniature person. He also has very powerful regenerative abilities, managing to reform after being severed and attaining basic immortality. Elder Toguro first appeared with his brother under Gonzo's leadership. When they fought against Kuwabara and Yusuke, Elder Toguro took the shape of a sword for his brother. After that he only makes a few background appearances until the final round.

Katsumi Suzuki

Juri

Pendukung

Juri is the referee of the Dark Tournament after Koto was forced to switch to commentary. She is apparently a sea-creature demon. She is an idol in the human and demon planes. Towards the end of the Dark Tournament, she complains that she will die a virgin, but in the Makai Tournament, Koto implies that she got "what she wanted", and there is an extra scene showing Juri watching the tournament with a demon with a mustache, presumably her husband.

Katsuyo Endou

Gama

Pendukung

Gama is a member of the Shadow Channelers (Team Masho) whose speciality is the "secret art" of make-up, using paint made of blood to bring out spiritual abilities and increase strength. His two known attacks are the Make-up of Chains (Gokujono Sho) and the Make-up of the Seal (Nembaku Fuji no Sho). He fights Kurama in the opening team match, and uses his attacks to chain Kurama down and then seal his yōki (aura, or demon energy) within him. Kurama's only choice, because of the Gokujo no Sho, is to use his hair to swing his Rose instead of his arms. He ends up killing Gama, and becomes unable to move off of the arena, and ends up fighting three consecutive matches.
