Akeno Misaki

Utama

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 152 cm (5'0") She is the commanding officer of Harekaze. She has a cheerful, positive personality and is an optimist who believes that "shipmates are family"; no matter what difficulties arise, she maintains the attitude that "things will work out." She possesses incredible luck—winning the top prize in a lottery on her first try, never drawing anything less than "Daikichi" (Excellent Luck) on a fortune slip, and cracking open eggs with double yolks on more than five occasions. She applied to the maritime school in Yokosuka to fulfill the dream of becoming a "Blue Mermaid" that she had shared with her childhood friend since they were young. Her extraordinary luck extended to the entrance exam, where the topics she "happened" to study were the ones that appeared on the test. She successfully passed the exam for the Navigation Department (as evidenced by the official site, the insignia on her uniform's right shoulder, the specialization emblem in the manga version, and scenes of the practical exam) and became the captain of the Kagerō-class ocean-going training vessel Harekaze. She memorized the names of all 31 crew members and two animal mascots, addressing them as "—chan" (or "—san" in some cases).

Shiina Natsukawa

Mashiro Munetani

Utama

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 159 cm (5'2") She is the daughter of the Soya family, a prestigious lineage that has produced generations of Blue Mermaids. As the youngest of three sisters, she is a serious honor student who excels in every subject; however, she is incredibly unlucky—incidents include shifting her answers by one spot on an entrance exam and colliding with Akeno Misaki to fall into the sea right after enrolling. Consequently, she is constantly muttering, "I have no luck..." She dislikes the nickname "Shiro-chan," given to her by Akeno, and prefers to be addressed as "Vice-Captain" or "Ms. Soya." Hiromi Kuroki looks up to her with admiration and frequently supports her. While she maintains a serious and dignified demeanor, she loves cute things and keeps a large collection of stuffed animals in her room—which she ends up sharing with Wilhelmina. Incidentally, her favorite stuffed animal is a shark named Bruce. As seen in the "specialty emblem" displayed on the right shoulder of her uniform, she applied to and passed the entrance exam for the Gunnery and Torpedo Department at Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School. As a result, she effectively performs the duties of the Gunnery and Torpedo Officer during combat.

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah AB

Height: 158 cm (5'2") As Akeno's childhood friend and a source of mutual encouragement, she aspires to become a Blue Mermaid. After enrolling at Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School, she is appointed captain of the Musashi. She excels academically and possesses strong leadership qualities. It can be inferred that she applied to and passed the entrance exam for the Navigation Department. Having been a model student since childhood—gifted with an exceptional memory and a diligent nature that allowed her to handle anything with ease—she had begun to lose interest in everything around her. However, befriending Akeno changed that completely; she came to feel that being with Akeno was the most exciting thing in the world. Consequently, while she may appear to be the "big sister" figure to Akeno at first glance, she is actually the one who relies more heavily on the other emotionally. After entering junior high, both girls were taken in by new families and lived apart; however, their bond goes far beyond that of ordinary childhood friends—they are so close that they embrace whenever they reunite. During their junior high years, they kept in touch via email, and she even sent Akeno a self-made study guide to help her prepare for the marine high school entrance exam. It appears her mother was a Blue Mermaid.

Sora Amamiya

Maron Yanagiwara

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 146 cm (4'8") She is a childhood friend of Hiromi Kuroki and hails from the same hometown. Although she is a dependent type who fears being alone, she puts on a cheerful front for those around her. Despite being from Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture, she possesses the spirited, straightforward attitude of a true-blue Edokko (native of old Tokyo). Influenced by her grandfather—a fan of period dramas—she grew up watching the genre with him and developed a fondness for the distinctive Edo-style dialect. She is skilled at tinkering with machinery; as the crew member in charge of the engines, she takes such pride in her role that she refers to herself as a "stoker" (or "boiler-tender"). Having studied marine engineering since junior high school, she possesses top-tier technical skills and an exceptional memory—capable of recalling blueprints after seeing them just once. However, her somewhat careless nature can be a drawback. With the mindset of a dedicated artisan, she often stays behind in the engine room to tend to the machinery or take a quick nap, even when the rest of the crew is relaxing or playing on the deck. She also met the other members of her close-knit quartet of Engineering Department friends during the entrance exam. Since her grandfather was a fisherman, her family meals consisted of fish dishes day after day; consequently, while she became skilled at dressing fish, she grew to dislike eating them.

Natsumi Takamori

Hiromi Kuroki

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 169 cm (5'5") She is a childhood friend and fellow native of the same hometown as Maron Yanagihara. According to Maron, "Kuro-chan is cool and composed, yet kind; I want to stay close friends with her forever." Although she appears cool, she tends to get intensely fixated on things once she takes an interest; for instance, a childhood tour of a soy sauce factory got her hooked on making her own soy sauce, and seeing a diesel locomotive sparked a hobby of tinkering with machinery. Perhaps due to this nature, she was once unsure of her future path during junior high; however, after meeting Mashiro Soya at the Blue Mermaid Festa and the entrance exam venue, she developed a strong admiration for her and resolved to become a Blue Mermaid herself. Incidentally, Maron gets jealous, fearing that "Kuro-chan might get snatched away by some random girl." Beyond general machinery, she possesses deep knowledge regarding fuels, lubricants, and explosives. After enrolling, she was delighted to be assigned to the same ship—the Harekaze—as Mashiro, but she openly expressed dissatisfaction and jealousy over the fact that Akeno Misaki, rather than Mashiro, served as the ship's captain.

Natsuki Aikawa

Shima Tateishi

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 147 cm (4'8") Chief Artillery Officer of the destroyer-class ship, Harekaze. She comes across as quiet, reserved, and soft-spoken. Her speech is halting, limited to just a word or two; when answering, she simply says "Oui." It was the school's decision to assign her to the Harekaze in the hope that the experience would improve her communication skills. As her list of special talents suggests, she excels at softball; she is a true professional who delivers results, even though she says little more than "Oui" during matches. She also loves curry—so much so that she once ate it for every meal for two whole weeks. In fact, she becomes quite articulate whenever the conversation turns to curry. While one might think eating nothing but curry for a fortnight would get tedious, it apparently wasn't a hardship for her at all.

Nozomi Furuki

Mei Irizaki

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah AB

Height: 146 cm (4'8") Mei Irizaki is the Chief Torpedo Officer aboard the Harekaze. She is self-willed and hates to lose. She tends to act impulsively and impatiently—much like the famous depiction of Oda Nobunaga: "If the cuckoo doesn't sing, kill it." She can often be seen with Shima Tateishi, whom she is best friends with.

Atsumi Tanezaki

Kouko Nosa

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 155 cm (5'1") Secretary of the destroyer-class ship, Harekaze. Usually polite and mild-mannered, she is a "jack-of-all-trades" who can handle literally anything. She holds the "Database Specialist" certification—considered the most difficult domestic qualification in the field—and is constantly seen with a tablet, recording data, performing calculations, and gathering information. It can be inferred that she qualified for the Paymaster Corps. She possesses an exceptional memory—capable of reciting the full, 100-plus-character official name of Bangkok without error—yet she lacks social skills to such an extreme degree that her interview scores were lower even than Shima's; consequently, she has few close friends. Claiming that "fiction holds more truth than non-fiction," she has a habit of escaping reality; she might bring Zimbabwean dollars for a gag performance or present her speculations through highly exaggerated one-woman skits where she alters her voice for different roles. She develops an increasingly peculiar rapport with Mina, with whom she hits it off due to their shared taste in movie genres. However, since she mostly enjoys these scenarios within her own imagination, the initial reaction from others was lukewarm—often deemed "not particularly funny."

Yuuko Kurose

Rin Shiretoko

Pendukung

Female

Height: 148 cm (4'9") She serves as the Navigation Officer aboard the Harekaze, an ocean-going training ship of the Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School. Although she often handles the helm on the bridge, she has a terrible sense of direction. She is an incredibly anxious and timid person who always seems somewhat jittery and prone to bursting into tears. Ironically, however, she becomes strangely energetic whenever she decides to make a run for it—sometimes even misusing her talent for running fast to facilitate her escape. Perhaps due to her constant worrying, she suffers from frequent stomach aches and always carries stomach medicine with her. Having spent her life running away from things out of fear since childhood, she decided to become a Blue Mermaid in an effort to change herself. Encouraged by Akeno whenever she falls into a slump, she is striving to pick herself up and move forward. Mayumi Uchida, a fellow member of the Navigation Department, is her childhood friend; she, too, has often been dragged into Suzu's habit of running away. Her family runs a shrine located on the water off the coast of Hinomisaki in Shimane Prefecture, and she serves as a shrine maiden there. Since the shrine is known for granting blessings related to matchmaking and good fortune, she visited Yokosuka's Suwa Shrine—famous for granting success in exams—during the New Year holidays to pray for her admission to the marine school. However, her flawless execution of the ritual purification (emizu) led a shrine official to mistake her for a fellow professional, and she ended up helping out with the work. It remains unclear whether the two of them ever realized this connection after meeting aboard the Harekaze.

Yurika Kubo

Hikari Ogasawara

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 155 cm (5'1") She is in charge of gunnery on the Harekaze, primarily handling targeting duties. She acts as the leader when working alongside fellow gunnery crew members Michiru Takeda and Junko Hioki. She has loved games involving throwing objects at targets—such as darts—since childhood; she was so enthusiastic about understanding the mechanics of motion that she even studied her older brother's physics textbooks. While she excels at mathematics and physics, she struggles with subjects like biology and Japanese literature, feeling that they cannot be neatly explained by mathematical formulas. As for her other hobby, the tea ceremony, she is being taught it—somewhat against her will—by an aunt who is a tea ceremony instructor. Although she and Michiru attended different junior high schools, they became friends after frequently running into each other at a café located halfway between their schools—a spot that offered games like target shooting, billiards, and darts.

Miharu Sawada

Michiru Takeda

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 162 cm (5'3") She is in charge of gunnery on the Harekaze, primarily operating the rotation of the main guns. She once dreamed of becoming a gunnery officer on a large warship but had to give up that ambition due to deteriorating eyesight. Nevertheless, she remains determined to work in the field of gunnery and aspires to hold a position related to it. Her failing eyesight is attributed to either excessive studying or her obsession with billiards. She even brought a billiard set aboard the Harekaz, though she is currently at a loss for a place to set it up. She has a somewhat sadistic streak and often plays the "straight man" to the scatterbrained Hikari and Junko. She is poor at geography and believes that deer are the famous specialty of Mie Prefecture. Although she and Hikari attended different junior high schools, they became close acquaintances after frequently hanging out at a café—located roughly halfway between their schools—that offered games like target shooting, billiards, and darts.

Hitomi Kikuchi

Junko Heki

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 153 cm (5'0") She is in charge of gunnery on the Harekaze, specifically handling the firing operations. She used to worry that her classmates wouldn't remember her name, as "Heki" is a difficult one to read. She is fond of Hikari and Michiru—who remembered her name right away—as well as Akeno, who learned her full name. To master the art of gunnery, she learned the game of ring toss, approaching it from a physics-based perspective. She excels in subjects relevant to gunnery, such as physics, fluid dynamics, mathematics, geology, and meteorology. However, she is not good at chemistry. She frequently uses onomatopoeic sounds like "bang" (bakyun). She shares a tendency for wild fantasizing with a certain record-keeper; specifically, she concocts her own scenarios regarding how Hikari and Michiru met—scenarios often involving ruthless, "no-holds-barred" drama.

Minami Tanaka

Kayoko Himeji

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 148 cm (4'9") She is responsible for operating the Harekaze's No. 2 torpedo tube, including traversing and firing. She has an easygoing personality and loves bowling, an interest influenced by her father, who is a professional bowler. She has even competed against fellow bowling enthusiast Ritsuko in a tournament. Inspired by the sight of her mother—a crew member on an ocean-going liner—in uniform, she aspired to a career in the maritime industry and enrolled in a maritime school. She sometimes joins her mother's ship when her father is away on overseas voyages; consequently, while she has extensive experience abroad and is skilled at English listening comprehension, she is extremely poor at speaking the language. Quiet by nature, she is almost always with Ritsuko while aboard the Harekaze, except when they are manning their separate torpedo tube stations. She is also said to be knowledgeable about sumo wrestling, thanks to her family's influence.

Rui Tanabe

Kaede Marikouji

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 158cm (5'2") Calm and composed, and raised in a wealthy family, she speaks with extreme politeness. Her family estate is vast—the distance from the front gate to the main entrance alone takes about twenty minutes to walk—and she was accustomed to carrying checks rather than loose change. The Madenokoji family founded Madenokoji Heavy Industries, amassing a fortune in shipbuilding and trade across the Tokai region during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period. They remain responsible for constructing the majority of residential floating structures in the Tokai region today and even own private floating vessels. She is always seen wearing a shawl. Aboard the Harekaze, she is renowned for having one of the most beautiful heads of long black hair, which retains its luster even when water shortages force the crew to bathe in saltwater. She is musically gifted; she has mastered a wide range of string and keyboard instruments—playing the violin at a professional level—and possesses an extraordinary ear for pitch. Curiously, however, she struggles with wind instruments. Despite this weakness, she serves as the Harekaze's bugler, using a trumpet to signal the time and convey other messages. She is also an avid music listener and is a devoted user of vacuum-tube amplifiers. She leverages her keen sense of pitch to handle sonar operations, though the lack of a relief crew member makes the role demanding; during a late-night battle against a submarine, she found herself fighting off drowsiness as much as the enemy. Her family is the head of the Madenokoji school of naginata (halberd) martial arts, and she is a highly skilled practitioner who has attained full mastery of the discipline.

Sakura Nakamura

Satoko Katsuta

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 160cm (5'2") She is a navigator on the Harekaze. She has a straightforward, easygoing personality. From Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture; she spoke the local "Iyo-ben" dialect until junior high, so she tends to add "zona" to the end of her sentences. She's good at Russian and loves pirozhki. Her family was in the trading business, so she grew up surrounded by Russian picture books and toys. She decided to attend the maritime school because she used to play on her family's ships all the time. One of the few Harekaze crew members who holds a Medium-sized Vessel Skipper license (which requires at least a year of experience after obtaining the Small Vessel license). On the Harekaze, she works in the chart room managing nautical charts and calculating courses, but it’s a relatively laid-back position. That’s why she sometimes takes over steering duties from the Chief Navigator or helps out the other navigation crew members. However, things get busy during combat, and Isoroku—who likes to play around when she is not busy—gets in the way, so it’s a hassle for her to shoo him out.

Chisato Satsuki

Hideko Yamashita

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 145 cm (4'8") A controller responsible for safety on the port side of the naval vessel Harekaze. She is distinguished by her ribbon-adorned hairstyle that reveals her forehead and her narrow eyes. Her family runs a dry-cleaning shop in Yokosuka; she became interested in the Blue Mermaids after seeing signal flags on a ship's mast during a public viewing and thinking they looked like laundry—perhaps a sign of her slightly eccentric nature? She is a diligent girl who studies steadily in her spare time; she gets help with mathematics—her weak subject—from Ritsuko and Kayoko of the Gunnery and Torpedo Department. She is an excellent listener, often prompting people to open up and share things they hadn't intended to reveal. Surprisingly, she is said to be the athletic type.

You Taichi

Mayumi Uchida

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 158 cm (5'2") A control officer responsible for starboard safety aboard the Harekaza. She is characterized by her somewhat dark complexion. She has a quiet and gentle personality. However, she dreams of striking it rich and regularly buys lottery tickets within her allowance. Her goal of becoming a Blue Mermaid was actually driven by the desire to travel the world and buy lottery tickets. She is a childhood friend of Suzu and has previously been dragged into the consequences of Suzu's tendency to run away from things. In judo, she excels at ground techniques but struggles with standing techniques, which has hindered her progress.

Emi Miyajima

Tsugumi Yagi

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 151 cm (5'0") Friends with Kei—a fellow Harekaze radio operator, since before they entered the academy. She is the daughter of a priest at Yokosuka’s Suwa Shrine (dedicated to the deity of academic success) and used to serve as a shrine maiden. Her mother works as a barber in addition to her other duties. She possesses an astonishing, latent talent for dowsing; she is a "lucky girl"—reminiscent of a certain ocean-going ship captain—who once struck oil on the playground in elementary school and discovered a hot spring in the school's backyard during junior high. It was actually the results of her dowsing that led her to aim for the maritime academy. She is skilled at rapid smartphone typing, a talent that proves useful for maintaining communication logs. An avid reader who loves gathering information, she is constantly reading e-books.

Nanami Yamashita

Megumi Uda

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah AB

Height: 148 cm (4'9") Her trademark is an X-shaped hair accessory. Like Akeno Shima and the others, she loves curry—specifically, authentic Indian-style curry. Because she prefers the real deal, she is particularly fond of dishes like chicken masala and keema curry, and she likes eating them with naan bread. Her hobbies include photography and amateur radio; she developed an interest in the latter after tinkering with radios alongside her grandfather. She has a strong preference for film cameras—partly because she owns a film camera that was a keepsake from her grandfather—but since the Harekaze lacks developing facilities, she brings a digital SLR on board instead. She says she simply loves the mechanical aspects of the equipment. On the Harekaze, she serves as the electronic detection specialist—essentially, the radar operator. The radar system was installed after the ship's initial completion; the radar screen itself isn't located on the bridge, so she operates from a small room added to the rear of the bridge and relays reports via a voice pipe. She has been friends since junior high school with Tsugumi Yagi, who handles telegraphy (wireless communication) in the adjacent room. Although she is aware of Tsugumi's uncanny dowsing abilities, she remains a skeptic and a realist.

Akane Fujita

Machiko Noma

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 165 cm (5'4") A classmate of Akeno Misaki, she serves as a lookout in the Navigation Department aboard the Kagerou-class ocean-going training vessel Harekaze; she chose this role partly because it does not require much conversation with others. Perhaps due to her background at the Shibu Pass Observatory in Gunma Prefecture—located near the highest point on a Japanese national highway—she is depicted parasailing on several occasions throughout the story. She displays superhuman physical capabilities: she detects incoming fire from the instructor ship Sarushima before impact; stands upright on the Harekaze's yardarm (essentially a pole just over ten centimeters in diameter) to send semaphore signals; and spots a ship 30 kilometers away with the naked eye, even correctly identifying its name. Her physical prowess stems from her background at the observatory; constantly gazing at the stars improved her eyesight, while running through the mountains of Gunma since childhood honed her physical strength. Incidentally, she wears glasses to correct farsightedness, meaning her actual vision is quite sharp. For this reason, she often pushes her glasses up onto her forehead while on lookout duty to better spot distant targets. This also explains why she sits at the very back of the classroom; sitting closer would actually make it harder for her to see. She is popular among the girls, and there are fans of hers aboard the Harekaze. Miumi Tōmatsu is particularly fond of her, amassing a collection of photos of Machiko (who seems quite pleased about it). She gained fans aboard the Schee as well.

Yuu Kobayashi

Reo Wakasa

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah A

Height: 157 cm (5'2") Because her father participated in yacht races, she had been sailing small boats known as dinghies since childhood. She wanted to obtain a small-craft skipper's license in junior high school but was denied permission by her father; consequently, she aimed to enroll in a maritime school where she could officially earn the qualification. After enrolling, the school suggested she join the Navigation Department due to her excellent eyesight, but she firmly declined, preferring the Marine Engineering Department instead. She is a member of a close-knit, gossip-loving quartet that includes Sakura, Runa, and Sora; the four of them often play card-based mahjong together during their free time. Her playing style relies heavily on making calls like "pon" and "chi"; while this allows her to win hands frequently, the resulting scores are often low, making her vulnerable to come-from-behind losses. She reportedly prefers seafood-based okonomiyaki—such as shrimp or squid varieties—and considers cheese or bacon to be "heretical" toppings; however, if they are placed in front of her, she will eat them anyway, albeit while complaining. Among the four friends, she is the one most prone to venting her complaints.

Ayaka Shimizu

Sakura Ise

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah B

Height: 163 cm (5'3") She is one of the four-girl group that loves gossip, alongside Reo, Runa, and Sora. Due to her figure, she often gets hit on when she goes swimming in the ocean—a source of annoyance for her—so she began swimming at a pool owned by an acquaintance of her grandfather. The acquaintance who owned the pool was a former Chief Engineer who taught Sakura how to tinker with machinery; furthermore, hearing stories from the Blue Mermaids who frequented the pool inspired her to aim for the Marine Academy. She has an easygoing personality; during the mahjong games the four friends often play, she frequently has the game won by someone else just as she is in the middle of building a hand.

Sanae Fuku

Runa Suruga

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah AB

Height: 152 cm (5'0") She is one member of a close-knit, gossip-loving quartet that also includes Reo, Sakura, and Sora. Within the group, she plays the role of the "airhead." The four of them often play card-based mahjong during their downtime; despite enjoying the game, she doesn't seem to have fully grasped the rules, frequently committing fouls—a classic case of being enthusiastic but unskilled. In fact, she was the only one of the four to get in as a waitlisted candidate; when she didn't see her number on the list of successful applicants, she threw a tantrum—shouting things like "I quit being human!" and "From today on, I'm living as a fish!"—and dove into the winter sea. (She was apparently rescued by Satoko Katsuta shortly thereafter.) She is arguably the biggest ditz among the entire ship's crew. Despite appearing dim-witted, she excels in physics. Her father is a skilled naval architect, and she used to doodle by copying his blueprints when she was little. Thanks to that background, she is highly knowledgeable about subjects like engine mechanics and thermodynamics, though she struggles to articulate these concepts, making it difficult for others to understand her (she seems similar to Shima Tateishi in that she understands things in her head but can't explain them well). However, she and Maron Yanagihara can communicate through the way they swing their spanners, so she often serves as Maron's assistant during repairs. Kei asked her to build a naan oven using a boiler; she is currently working on it with Sora, though it remains unfinished.

Ari Ozawa

Sora Hirota

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah O

Height: 157 cm (5'2") She is one member of a quartet—along with Reo, Sakura, and Runa—that loves gossiping. She plays the rare role of the "straight man" (the one who delivers the punchline-correcting retort) within the group, viewing it as her mission to call out Maron whenever she acts the fool. Since childhood, she has tinkered with engines alongside her father aboard their family's cruiser; seeing Blue Mermaid vessels inspired her to aspire to a career in naval engineering. For this reason, she has not yet decided whether she will actually become a Blue Mermaid herself in the future. She has a surprisingly serious and steady personality; she plays cautiously—even in mahjong—and is the most consistent winner among the four.

Sayaka Kaneko

Hime Wazumi

Pendukung

Female · Gol. darah AB

Height: 152 cm (5'0") She serves as the Damage Control Officer aboard the Harekaze, responsible for the maintenance and repair of shipboard facilities. She enrolled in the Marine High School for Girls to put her skilled craftsmanship to use. However, she struggles with the mathematics required for managing supplies and fuel. She has a somewhat nagging personality and considers dieting an essential part of daily life. She is dexterous and skilled at manual work; she is particularly adept at building ship-in-a-bottle models. Since boarding the Harekaze, her busy daily schedule has prevented her from working on her ship-in-a-bottle models—a source of frustration for her. She has been close friends with Momo, a fellow damage control crew member, since junior high school. Her parents are from Kanda, and she is a festival enthusiast whose blood stirs at the mere mention of one; having helped build mikoshi (portable shrines) during junior high, she even constructs her own. Incidentally, she was born in Yokosuka.
